Is a division between Saudi Arabia and the US beginning to show itself?

The US is now condemning Saudi of religious repression. 
In a turn of events that makes no logical sense, the US government is turning on the Saudi government and in a sharply worded document accuses the Saudi government of repressing freedom of religion.

The Bush administration has had a long and cozy relationship with the government of Saudi Arabia in spite of the ties between the Saudi government and international terrorism – as we are led to believe.

In an article posted by the Washington Post, “The designation of Saudi Arabia was made as the Bush administration has come under sharp attack from Democrats -- and the hit movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" -- for its close relationship with Saudi rulers.”

Saudi Arabia is the largest producer of oil in the world and the US has always turned a blind eye to the actions of the ruling version of Wahhabi Islam.  So the question that begs to be asked is: “Why now is the US changing its attitude knowing full well that the US will disrupt the oil supply and demand chain that links the US to Saudi?

The US says that the matter will be dealt with privately, but hinted at sanctions being imposed against Saudi Arabia.

"Never one word of that has been spoken to me by anybody," said John V. Hanford III, ambassador at large for international religious freedom.

The US war of words against Saudi are in direct contradiction to America’s far right Christian Leaders who are using their extremely close relations with Bush, pressuring him  to declare, and mandate, Christianity as the official religion of the United States.  Up until the late 1950's the United States had an extremely anti-Semitic sentiment.  America's internal war against terrorism is focusing on Moslem organizations and Moslem mosques.

Or is the whole Saudi matter really an election ploy?
