During the restoration of Iraq, a need for assistance from international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund will arise, FRG Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said in St. Petersburg on Saturday. For this, they will need a UN mandate.
The experience accumulated by the UN in other countries is needed in creating a democratic Iraq and restoring its state and economic structures, he told the international conference "Peace, Security and International Law: Insight into the Future," which opened in Russia's "northern capital." It is important now that a humanitarian catastrophe be prevented in Iraq, stressed Gerhard Schroeder. In his opinion, the people who are waging the war are responsible for the security of citizens and order there.
He said that he wanted to know how crises similar to the Iraqi one would be settled in the future. He is convinced that the UN is the only body which should be relied on in such situations.
