The Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg will open its 221st season on Friday with Pyotr Tchaikovsky's opera "Mazepa", reported the press service of the theater.
In the near future the theater will show the opera "The Golden Cockerel", the scenery for which was not destroyed by the August fire in the theater.
However, the scenery for "Mazepa" was destroyed but it was restored within a month and a half.
"This fact testifies to the creative activity of the theater and to its confidence that no circumstances will influence the readiness of the theater to open its season. The Mariinsky Theater starts this season, not frustrating its repertoire and tour plans," pointed out the press service.
Maestro Valery Gergiyev will conduct the orchestra on the first day of the season. He will specially return for this purpose to St. Petersburg from New York where he opened the seasons in the Metropolitan Opera and the Carnegie Hall.
