The Red Sormovo shipbuilding yard in Nizhny Novgorod will build tankers to Malta's orders. On Friday the head vessel of a new series of tankers was laid down at the yard. The project was prepared by the yard's design bureau to the orders of the Maltese company KSS Shipping Ltd. The contract provides for the construction of 10 tankers to carry Diesel oil, heating oil, petroleum products and crude oil. One such ship costs six million dollars. Its dimensions are: length 141 metres, beam 16.6 metres, and depth 6.1 metres. Its carrying capacity at sea is 5,000 tons and on rivers 5,200 tons. In 2002 one ship will be built, and in 2003 two more. The future of the contract will depend on the efficacy of their use.
