The first aircraft, a two-motor light plane, landed on the Sherkat airdrome in the Panjshir valley. The airdrome with stone-clay surface was constructed with the help of American army engineers for only six weeks. It is situated near the Gulbakhar village, some 80 km north of Kabul, near the entrance to the Panjshir valley, the Northern Alliance stronghold. Since the Bagram air base, captured by the Northern Alliance, is strongly damaged and is inappropriate for aircraft landing, Sherkat is the only airdrome in the Northern Alliance-controlled area, where cargos and military equipment can be delivered. This is crucial now, pending the Northern Alliance offensive from the Panjshir valley to Kabul.
