A pedestrian overpass collapsed on the rail in this Russian provincial centre on the Baltic coast. The accident came within a split second after the tail of the Kaliningrad-Moscow train passed under the bridge on the city outskirts. No one was on the overpass, by rare luck, as an iron-and-concrete mass plunged down to leave a twenty-metre gap. Traffic stopped. It will take longer than a day and a night to remove the debris and repair electric cables over the railway, say Kaliningrad Rail experts.
