Two Chicago firefighters killed after building collapses

Two Chicago firefighters were killed and 14 others injured after a building collapsed during a fire this morning.

The collapse prompted a Mayday alarm just after 7 a.m. in an abandoned brick building at 1744 E. 75th Street when a wall collapsed trapping them at least four of them inside.

Four of the firefighters were listed in critical condition, another eight in stable, according to Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Robert Hoff, Chicago Tribune reports.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the two men who died were among four firefighters buried in debris Wednesday morning when the building's roof collapsed.

Langford says the injured include firefighters who rushed to rescue those trapped.

Langford says four of those hurt suffered critical injuries but that all 14 are expected to survive.

Wednesday is the 100th anniversary of the Union Stock Yards fire that killed 21 Chicago firefighters, NPR reports.
