16 Schoolchildren Suffered in Traffic Accident

The press-service of the republican road police reports that the accident occurred at a bus stop at 7:30 a.m. A bus stopped there several minutes before the tragedy and passengers started crossing the road. There were about 20 pupils from nearby villages who were to change to a school bus soon. The bus was standing on the opposite side of the road. A VAZ auto was going from the opposite direction. The pedestrians stopped on the free part of the road to let the car pass by. A witness says that quite of a sudden one of the pedestrians, an aged man quickened his steps right before the oncoming car. Not to knock the man down the driver had to swerve to the right and pulled up. But the car went into a skid on the icy road, it turned round and knocked schoolchildren down. In the mess, 16 junior pupils suffered and were immediately taken to a hospital with cranial injuries and bruises. Two pupils are in grave condition in the reanimation ward.

The driver, a middle-aged man from the capital of the republic, Cheboksary was shocked with the accident. The pedestrian who provoked the traffic accident fled from the accident site.
