Chinese newspapers said "Dead Man's Chest," starring Johnny Depp, was banned because its depiction of ghosts, skulls and a vicious octopus character were too violent and terrifying for young audiences.
But an official who answered the phone at China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television said the film had not been submitted to the agency for approval.
The adventure snatched a record US$132 million at U.S. box offices in its first three days of release, the AP reports.
