An 84-year-old woman who was working in the fields early Tuesday near the town of Pascani in northeast Romania collapsed and died of a heat-related heart attack, said Roxana Agrigoroaie, police spokeswoman, the AP reports.
An 88-year-old man died late Monday in the northern city of Iasi after walking to a grocery store. He collapsed in the store and died of a heart attack caused by the heat, said Agrigoroaie.
Temperatures soared to 36 Celsius (96.8 Fahrenheit) in Iasi, about 8 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit) above the seasonal average. On Tuesday, there were 140 calls to the ambulance service due to heat-related problems, said Florin Agape, head of the ambulance service in the city in northern Romania.
