Most of those who fled three villages on the mountain's southern slopes had returned home earlier Wednesday after spending several weeks in camps, villager Edi Egan said. After the Merapi's another eruption people decided to leave the camp, the AP reports.
Government volcanologist Triani said the cloud traveled some 5 kilometers (3 miles) down the slope and almost enveloped one village.
