Five paparazzi photographers who claim Heath Ledger spit at them last year retaliated Friday by squirting the acclaimed actor with water pistols outside the Sydney premiere of his movie "Brokeback Mountain," a news report said. As the 26-year-old Australian actor arrived with his partner and movie co-star Michelle Williams at Cinema Paris at Fox Studios on Friday night, the photographers squirted him in the face and chest for 10 seconds, wetting his hair and clothing, Australian Associated Press reported.
Ledger raised his hands to protect himself and attempted to shield Williams, who was also sprayed, as the couple rushed inside the cinema, the national news service said.Security guards moved toward the five photographers, but the photographers fled the scene.
Veteran paparazzi photographer Peter Carrette, who was not involved in the incident, told AAP: "Enough is enough." "Some boys thought they would get him back for spitting at them," Carrette said. "It's (spitting) totally out of order."
Ledger told a Sydney newspaper last week he was hurt and embarrassed by claims he had spit at media representatives on the Sydney set of the movie "Candy" last year. "It's disgusting and awful. I would never in a million years do anything like that," Ledger was quoted by The Daily Telegraph as saying. "I'm not some sort of dirty spitter," he added.
Ledger wore a hooded sweater under a black suit jacket to the premiere, as well as sunglasses and sneakers. Williams, the mother of Ledger's new baby, Matilda, wore a navy blue Chanel-label dress, reports the AP. N.U.
