The United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 1378 for Afghanistan will give a new impetus to the international effort to promote political settlement of the Afghan conflict, said a source in the Russian foreign ministry. The resolution, which was unanimously adopted on November 14, supports the international effort to eradicate terrorism in accordance with the UN Charter and, as Russian diplomats point out, condemns the Taliban movement for letting Al-Qaeda and other terrorist organisations use Afghanistan as a springboard for terrorist attacks abroad. The resolution makes it possible to form a transitional administration and then a new government with the help of the United Nations, said the foreign ministry source.
