Vladimir Putin is confident of the positive development of Russian-US relations. Moscow does not approve of the unilateral US decision to abrogate the 1972 ABM treaty and considers it to be a mistake, the Russian President said answering questions live on TV. The president's opinion on the US reasons to abrogate the Treaty is that this decision "is linked not only with Russia but with the well-known US position in the world". Washington has launched "a new stage of in foreign policy," Putin said. According to him, the abrogation of international agreements indicates "the new quality of the US foreign policy." But the US abrogation of the ABM Treaty cannot influence the Russian-American relations because it does not threaten Russia's national security, Vladimir Putin stressed. Russia will do nothing to spoil Russian-US relations, the President said adding that "we shall, certainly, uphold our interests". The quality of the new relations with Washington will depend not only on Russia but also on the United States, he noted.
