A sector of the rail mainline, which is being constructed to link the Russian Urals with Finland and other Scandinavian states, will be commissioned today. The 127-kilometre sector runs through the republic of Karelia, Northern Russia. Its construction was launched in 1990, then it was frozen to be resumed only in August 1998. According to the government of Karelia, the cost of the sector's construction is 9 bln. rubles. It's traffic capacity is expected to reach 28 mln. tons of various freight per year.
