Russia may be in 30th place in beer consumption in the world in 2001, the Russian Union of Beer Producers forecasted. Its representatives stressed that their estimations do not correspond with publications of some mass media sources that referred to an annual report of the Japanese Brewery Kirin. The latter reported that Russia is in seventh in beer consumption in the world. According to preliminary results provided by the union, Russia produced more than 6 billion liters of beer in 2001, which is similar to the volume of beer production in the top ten beer producing countries. However, the consumption of beer in Russia is no more than 42-44 liters per capita.
