The Iranian nuclear crisis was expected to top the agenda, but Russian news agencies quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying that the diplomats would also discuss the situation in the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Korean Peninsula. Nonproliferation efforts and the fight against terrorism were also to be discussed, according to the AP.
Lavrov said that the goal of Thursday's meeting was to "advance, if possible, the solution to this or that problem and lighten the load" on the G-8 leaders' agenda for the July 15-17 summit, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.
