The European Union has chosen its first President of the newly set up Military Committee from a country outside NATO. The Portuguese ex-Chief of Joint Staff, General Gabriel Espirito Santo and Italian General Marco Albino were overlooked in favour of Finnish General Gustav Haglund. The President of the European Union’s Military Committee will be responsible for the EU Rapid Reaction Force and will coordinate the European Union’s military policy. This will cover crisis management (intervention in areas in conflict) and the financial cost of military operations.
