The Russian Defence Ministry takes all proper measures regarding escalation of military political situation at the South-West direction given NATO's military build-up and unstable situation in Ukraine, General Sergey Shoygu, the Russian Minister of Defence claimed.
'For the latest years military political situation at the south-west strategic direction has escalated. It is mainly connected with NATO's military presence build-up in the eastern Europe, situation in Ukraine and activity of international terror groups, including those in the North Caucasus,' Shoygu pointed out.
'Thus, we have to take adequate measures,' the Defence Minister said.
Speaking about significant changes within military training, Shoygu highlighted that 'more than 200 drills have been carried out in the Southern military district since 2013.'
For the time being 4 divisions have been formed, 9 brigades and 22 regiments. Beside that, 2 missile brigades equipped with Iskander-M complexes, have been created. The Defence Minister also noted that number of service men will be doubled this year.
'A self-sufficient group of troops has been deployed in the Crimea. More than 4,000 new samples of weapons and military equipment have been sent to the Southern military department. Coast missile complexes and advanced submarines have been deployed,' Shoygu reported.
Today active work is being held not only on the increase of combat potential of the district, but also on the upgrade of maintenance support, training base and public sites, Shoygu concluded.
