As London was coming to consciousness today's morning after the celebration of victory in 2012 Olympics bid, shocking news horrified London citizens. London closed its subway system and evacuated all stations after explosions occurred in least one location on the network, and buses exploded in central London.
An explosion destroyed a double-decker bus in central London during rush hour Thursday, police said. Two other blasts also went off in other buses, reports said. There were reports of casualties, says the AP.
The explosion near Russell Square occurred not long after blasts on London subways earlier Thursday, police said. Dow Jones Newswires reported that police confirmed explosions on at least two others buses.
A witness said the entire top deck of that bus was destroyed. "I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air," Belinda Seabrook told Press Association, the British news agency. She said the bus was packed with people.
"It was a massive explosion and there were papers and half a bus flying through the air," she said.
All London hospitals were put on major incident alert after today’s explosions, IrelandOnline reports.
Ambulances are bringing casualties from one of the blast scenes, a spokesman for St Mary’s Hospital at Paddington said.
The spokesman said one patient was reported as seriously injured and others had minor wounds.
Sky News footage from Aldgate, in the heart of the City, showed commuters walking from the station covered in blood and soot and people being stretchered from the scene. At least a dozen fire engines were on the scene as nearby roads were closed off and offices evacuated.
