Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani said on Sunday that the Afghan authorities were ready to hand over captured foreign mercenaries to the UNO. The media believe that this statement by Rabbani was aimed at lifting the anxiety voiced by some Arab and Islamic nations with regard to the destiny of their captured citizens. According to Rabbani, the UN can determine the destiny of the POWs, i.e. either to send them to their homeland or to make them answerable for their crimes. In particular, Saudi Arabia and Qatar had earlier expressed their concerns over the destiny of their captured nationals. They called upon the Northern Alliance to act in line with the international conventions as regards the captives.
