Russia has reportedly begun using a modernized version of the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system during the special military operation, with claims suggesting the missile's maximum range has been increased to as much as 1,000 kilometers.

According to the Voennyi Osvedomitel Telegram channel, the upgraded missile achieves its longer range through a reduction in warhead mass, allowing for a larger fuel load. Ukrainian sources cited in the report argue that this design change enables the missile to travel significantly farther than earlier versions.

It is also claimed that the missile is capable of maneuvering throughout its entire flight trajectory. Such maneuverability is intended to reduce the probability of interception by air and missile defense systems, complicating tracking and engagement.

Comparison with Standard Iskander-M

The baseline ballistic missile used by the Iskander-M system, known as the 9M723, has a declared operational range of approximately 500 kilometers. Its standard warhead weighs around 480 kilograms, allowing for a variety of payload types depending on mission requirements.
