Annan Makes Statement on Iraq

The United Nations is willing to provide all the necessary humanitarian aid to the Iraqi population, Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General, says in an urgent statement.

He regrets war has come to Iraq for a third time within the last 25 years despite international efforts to prevent it. If Iraq disarmament efforts went on for a bit longer, that disarmament would have been achieved peacefully.

Be that as it may, this is no time to harp on differences of the recent past, and current problems have to be tackled, however hard they may be, Mr. Annan says with emphasis.

Avoiding outspoken denunciation of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he appeals to the belligerents to comply with the international humanitarian law and protect civilians from the grim consequences of war.
