Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov: U.S. should provide Russia with all information on space Shuttle Columbia crash

The United States should update Russia on how investigation into the crash of the Columbia space shuttle proceeds, Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov has said in a Novosti interview on Thursday.

It also refers to the decoding of information from flight recorders, found the other day in Texas. Otherwise, it will be hard to cooperate in the building of and servicing the International Space Station, said Leonov.

He noted that the discovered Columbia black box with 2,800 meters of magnetic tape of recordings of technical parameters /pressure, temperature, dynamic load/, arriving from 721 gages in different parts of the shuttle, can shed light on what happened to the Columbia in the last 45 minutes of the flight.

As reported by the American media, this weekend Admiral Geman-headed commission, looking into what caused the Columbia accident, will begin decoding the black box readings.

In American specialists' opinion, these recordings are in a satisfactory condition and the commission thinks it great luck they have been found.
