Two helicopters disappear in Russia over three days

Another helicopter disappeared today in Russia's East. It became the second chopper lost in the country over the recent three days. A contact with the Mi-8 helicopter was lost at 03:39 a.m. Moscow time. There were three members of the crew on board the helicopter. Specialists believe that the chopper was lost 85 kilometers north off Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in the Far East of Russia.

Another Mi-8 helicopter went off radar screens on November 27th, in the Kamchatka region of Russia. Five aircraft of the Defense Ministry are currently searching for the lost chopper in the area of its possible crash. Rescuers have already explored the slopes of two volcanoes, but they have not found any traces of the helicopter, which was carrying five people on board. The operation involves 94 people and 33 units of military hardware.

The Mi-8 helicopter disappeared in the Kamchatka region at about 04:00 Moscow time. It was carrying three members of the crew and two doctors of the Center for the Medicine of Catastrophes. The helicopter was supposed to fly to a small local town to take a sick person aboard there and transport the patient to a hospital in another town. The patient is being currently transported to the hospital by caterpillar track vehicle.

Specialists, meanwhile, believe that the Mi-8 helicopter most likely crashed in the area of the active Goreli Volcano, situated 120 kilometers south off Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski. The 1,828-meter-high mount is a ridge, which is comprised of accrete cones. There is a large acid lake in the crater of the active cone. The last eruption of the volcano occurred in 1986. The relief of the area is rather complex; windy weather complicates the rescuing operation too.
