The oldest ice found in Antarctica

German scientists drilled a 3,200 meters chink in Antarctica and took 120 pieces of ice from it. Their age is estimated at 900,000 years. It must be the oldest ice. Each piece is about half a meter in length and 10cm in diameter. Currently they are studied in Alfred Wegener Institute.

Scientists think that this ancient ice can help to value the risks of global warming and climate change. During the last 800,000 years warm and cold periods changed each other on Earth every 100,000 years, what lead to changes in amount of carbon in air. This ice should have saved information on such changes.
