Anti-terrorist operations should be approved by the UN Security Council, comply with the UN Charter and take into account the international law, Chinese President Jiang Zemin told his French counterpart Jacques Chirac in a telephone conversation Tuesday. The Chinese President reported to Chirac on the decisions of the informal APEC summit in Shanghai, particularly on the fight against terrorism. The leaders also discussed the Afghan settlement. Jiang Zemin stressed the solution of this problem should be based on the principles ensuring Afghanistan's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. Speaking about the format of the future Afghan government, Jiang Zemin stressed it should represent the interests of all ethnic groups living in the country, with the United Nations Organization playing the key role in solving these problems. Jacques Chirac agreed with such approach, the official Chinese sources said.
