Russia and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation are making their contribution to overcoming confrontation and violence in the North Caucasus and combating international terrorism. This statement was made by Alexei Fedotov, deputy foreign minister of Russia, at a general session of the Russian Commission for UNESCO Affairs. At the same time, the potential of Russia-UNESCO cooperation has not been exhausted so far, Fedotov said. He pointed out, in particular, to the unique role of UNESCO in ensuring linguistic rights in the world. Russia thinks that the Commission for UNESCO Affairs could make more active use of its ties with corresponding organisations of the Commonwealth of Independent States to ensure the rights of Russian-speaking population in CIS member-states.
