The sperm was donated through artificial insemination for a lesbian couple to have three children. Everything was running well until the lesbian couple decided to separate and it was then that the paternity issue came into question.
Obviously, neither of the mothers could be the biological father. It was then that the court decided that the father should pay child maintenance, according to Swedish law. Normally, sperm donors remain anonymous, but in this case the man was a friend of the couple.
The case has created a legal precedent in Sweden since sperm donors have not until now been considered responsible for legal fatherhood. The defendant intends to appeal from the decision.
