Over 30,000 people died in road accidents in Russia, in 2002. This is according to Alexander Chekalin, Russia's Deputy Minister of Interior. Mr. Chekalin said 2002 was a hard year for traffic militia, the number of accidents having increased by 4% year-to-year. Over 164,000 road accidents have been registered since the beginning of this year, in which about 197,000 people were more or less seriously injured.
