Hollywood actor Macaulay Culkin, who played Kevin in the iconic Christmas franchise Home Alone, has admitted that he would be willing to appear in a continuation of the project, Variety reported.
Culkin said that he has even come up with a possible storyline. According to the actor, he could portray an adult Kevin who is kicked out of the house by his own son for failing to give him enough attention.
For now, however, this remains only Culkin’s personal wish, and there are currently no official discussions about a new film.
A Franchise That Became a Holiday Classic
Released in 1990 and 1992, Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, starring Culkin in the lead role, were major box-office successes. Together, the two films grossed nearly $800 million worldwide.
Interesting Facts About the Home Alone Franchise
The first two installments were directed by Chris Columbus. The original film tells the story of a boy named Kevin McCallister, whose parents leave for Christmas and accidentally forget him at home. To protect the house from burglars, Kevin invents an array of clever and often painful traps.
In Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Kevin boards the wrong plane and ends up in New York City, where he once again encounters the same burglars — this time as they plan to rob a toy store. Determined as ever, Kevin sets out to stop them.
Macaulay Culkin starred in both films at the age of eight. Although he had appeared in minor roles before — including in the TV series The Equalizer (1985) and the family comedy Rocket Gibraltar (1988) — it was the role of Kevin that brought him worldwide fame.
Why Culkin Was Chosen
As Chris Columbus recalled in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he watched hundreds of audition tapes and met with countless child actors while casting Kevin. But Culkin immediately stood out.
“He didn’t look like one of those perfect Hollywood kids. His ear was slightly crooked. He had a great voice that wasn’t irritating. He was just charming and genuinely funny,”
the director said.
Box Office Triumph and Awards
The film achieved staggering success. With a budget of $18 million, it earned more than $476.6 million worldwide, according to kinobusiness.com, becoming the highest-grossing Christmas movie of its era.
The picture received two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song and Best Original Score, as well as two Golden Globe nominations — including one for Culkin as Best Actor.
Sequels and Declining Returns
Following the success, the creators produced Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which grossed over $358 million worldwide. Filming took place at the Plaza Hotel, then owned by current U.S. President Donald Trump, who also made a cameo appearance as a hotel guest directing Kevin to the lobby.
In 1997, Home Alone 3 was released with an entirely new cast. Directed by Raja Gosnell and starring Alex D. Linz, the film earned only $79 million on a $32 million budget.
Further installments followed in 2004, 2012, and 2021, each with different actors and directors. None, however, managed to replicate the success of the original films starring Macaulay Culkin.
