Two Algerian children injured in earthquake brought for treatment in Moscow

Two Algerian children have been taken by plane to Moscow for additional treatment. They received leg injuries in a heavy earthquake that occurred in Algiers in May.

The news was announced by well-known paediatrician Leonid Roshal, who is in Paris with a working visit upon the invitation of his French colleagues.

Doctors of the international emergency aid crew led by Roshal started treating the children immediately after the earthquake. They were brought to Moscow upon the request of the Algerian party with assistance of the Russian Embassy to Algiers.

The children need a series of operations that will be followed by long aftercare, Roshal said.

Roshal set up the international emergency aid crew in 1988 after the earthquake in Spitaka. Since then "Roshal's doctors" have rendered assistance in over 20 cases of natural calamities, man-caused catastrophes and hostilities.

Leonid Roshal is head of the emergency surgery and children's trauma department of the Paediatric Scientific Research Institute. In 1996 journalists named him the World's Paediatrician.
