The wife of the Chinese pilot who was killed in the incident when a US spy plane crashed into a Chinese Air Force fighter escort as it neared Chinese airspace has written a letter to President Bush. The letter was handed into the Embassy of the United States of America in Beijing, addressed to George Bush. Ruan Guoqin, the wife of the pilot, is at present in hospital, suffering from shock, after the notification that her husband had been killed in an incident with US Armed Forces. In her letter, she accused George Bush of cowardice. “What is unbelievable is the attitude of indifference shown by you and your administration regarding the death of my husband”. Ruan Guoqin attributes total responsibility for the incident to the American Armed Forces and complains that the USA uses different weights and measures in different situations. “Are these the human rights and humanism that you (Americans) speak about every day? If so, will there be any justice in today’s world? I cry for the loss of my husband. I am sorry that certain people have lost their regard for the human condition. Give me a reason.” The fact that the US administration began by stating that it was the Chinese pilot’s fault that he crashed, then sent the Secretary of State to say that he regretted the loss of the pilot and only on the third day did President Bush express his regret also has created an anti-USA climate in China.
