As Pravda.ru has already reported, Vladimir Voronin, the leader of Moldovan communists, has until recently been the only presidential candidate while the republic’s constitutional court’s chairman Pavel Barbalat applied for presidency only yesterday. Former central committee’s first secretary and incumbent president Petr Luchinski has refused to “take part in a farce where the head of state is not elected by the people but appointed by the parliament.” Pavel Barbalat is almost certain to be elected president. His last-minute application and also its belonging to the “titular” nation may testify to this. Most likely, the local elite has put him forward exactly aiming at another show taking of the supreme post away from the communists.
