Taleban: Omar names successor

The spiritual leader of the Taleban, Mohammad Omar, has named his successor.

Mohammad Omar has named his successor in the event of his death in the current conflict: his second-in-command, Mullah Akhtar Mohammed Usmani. The news was given by a spokesperson of the Pakistani movement, Harakat ul-Mujahedin, which has close ties with the Taleban.

The spokesperson, Abu Abdul Rehman, declared that “Mullahs Omar and Usmani were schoolmates. They both fought against the Russians” during the Soviet armed intervention in Afghanistan, at the request of the democratically elected Najibullah government, between 1979 and 1989.

Both frequented the madrassa (Islamic school) Jamia Farooq Azam in Kandahar and when they finished their studies, they started to teach together. Both men are private figures and detest publicity. Usmani has only given one interview in his life, four years ago. He is a simple man, who eats only bread and fruit.

Abu Abdul Rehman states that Muhamad Omar is still in Kandahar.
