Respectable sources say that Israel might now pay two billion dollars for the breakdown of the transaction to sell Phalcon Airborne Warning and Control Systems (Awacs) to China.
The head of the Israeli Defense Ministry, Amos Yaron, was shocked, as reported by Israel’s mass media. Yaron believed that China would ask for not more than $500 million. However, the former Israeli ambassador to China, Ora Namir, declared in an interview to a Tel Aviv radio, “As I believe, we deserve the maximum punishment for our behaviour in connection with that transaction. The people who do not deal with China cannot imagine the amount of the damage. China is a very relevant country to us, the second most important country after the USA.”
Phalcon radar systems, which Israel promised to install for China in Russian Il-76 aircraft, are capable of fixing up to 60 targets within 400 kilometers. The breach of contract took place due to American blackmail. Bill Clinton, who was the American president at that time, told Ehud Barak, the Israeli premier of that time, that if he did not cease the transaction, then there would be no meeting with Yasser Arafat at Camp David. Barak was hoping that the meeting in Camp David would bring eternal peace for the Middle East, and he obeyed Clinton and broke the contract. Like everybody knows, it did not become possible to establish peace because of the provocative activity of Israeli extremists and Sharon’s terrorist policy. As the Chinese saying goes, “the hen is gone, the eggs are broken.”
