Putin said it was symbolic that the time of the "official start" of the work of the Presidential Council on Science and High Technologies coincided with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Igor Kurchatov, an outstanding Russian nuclear physicist.
When speaking at a Council meeting on Tuesday, the Head of State stressed that many important things in organisation of science in Russia were connected with the name of this outstanding physicist and great man".
The President expressed his hope that decisions taken by the Council on Science and High Technologies "would also enrich the potential laid by this prominent scientist".
Putin recalled that the Council members together with Russia's Security and State Councils had already discussed the basis of the state policy towards science and technologies and formed the plan of the Council's work.
The Council meeting was also attended by President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yuri Osipov, President of the Russian Kurchatov Institute Scientific Center Yevgeni Velikhov and other prominent Council academicians, Secretary of the Russian Security Council Vladimir Rushailo, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yevgeni Primakov, Vice Premier Alexei Kudrin, Russian Minister of Economic Development and Trade German Gref, Minister of Industry, Science and Technology Ilya Klebanov and Nuclear Energy Minister Alexander Rumyantsev.
