If the weather worsens greatly in the course of the Kursk salvage effort, the submarine could be laid back to the sea floor, Nico Buis, the head of the Smit International, was quoted as saying. In his words, the Mammoet and the Smit international companies have developed two scenarios envisaging worsening of the weather. The first one stipulates a rapid raising of the sub with its subsequent attachment to the Giant-4 barge. Then, the two vessels will head the sea coast in order to find shelter from the storm. The second scenario, according to Buis, is more realistic, that is, to pay out the cables and put the sub back to the floor of the Barents Sea. When the weather conditions become acceptable, the salvaging will be resumed.
