The authorities of Baghdad are planning to build a metro in the Iraqi capital, Adel al-Saadun, General Director of a company responsible for executing transport and communications projects of the country's transport ministry, told the Iraqi newspaper Babil.
The metro will consist of two branches, reports the newspaper. One will connect the center of the city with Baghdad's densely populated poor district, Saddam City, which is inhabited by 2 million of the capital's 5 million residents.
The other branch will connect the eastern district of Karrada Mesbah and the western district of Al-Baya.
According to al-Saadun, the Baghdad metro will be built solely by Iraqi specialists, without resorting to the help of foreign companies.
