Slovenian Elections

One and a half million Slovenians go to the polling stations today in the second round of the country’s Presidential elections, which coincides with the local government elections.

The Prime Minister of Slovenia, the 52-year-old Janez Drnovsek (Liberal Democratic Party, LDS) and the Attorney General, Barbara Brezigar (48, Independent, but backed by the Social Democrats and other centre and right-wind formations) stand in the second round of the election to find a substitute for President Milan Kucan.

The favourite is Drnovsek, who won the first round of the election on 10th November with 44% of the vote, while Brezigar received 31%. The second round, which will determine who is the Head of State for the next five years, is decided by a simple majority.

The municipal elections to choose the country’s 61 Mayors also take place today.
