As RIA Novosti news agency reported, Afanasyev decided that champagne bottles would be the best for the construction, since they were are strongest. He stacked the bottles, fixed them together with armature, and then grouted them.

Afanasyev had to spend a lot of his time looking for the construction material before he actually started working. He managed to find 15 thousand empty bottles at the local dumps, and he used nine thousand of them for fixing the old house. Afanasyev said that the new house would be very firm and warm. His family had already spent the winter in the bottle-wall house, and as it turned out, they used less than two tons of coal in comparison with four or five tons that were used when the family lived in a brick house.
