How the teams stand after one game each

Only five of the 16 teams in the final stages managed victories in the first round of eight matches, which brought 17 goals.

In Group A, Spain and Greece registered important wins against Russia (1-0) and hosts Portugal (2-1), leaving the group as follows:

Spain      3            1-0
Portugal 0             1-2
Russia    0             0-1

Portugal plays Russia tomorrow night in Lisbon, after Spain and Greece meet
in Porto. Defeat for either Portugal or Russia will mean almost certain
exclusion from the competition.

In Group B, only France won a game (2-1 against England), while Switzerland
and Croatia played a goalless draw.

Switzerland  1              0-0
England        0             1-2

England and Switzerland meet at 17.00 on Thursday in Coimbra, while France
and Croatia play in Leiria at 19.45.

In Group C, Sweden, Denmark and Italy all scored points in the first round,
the great loser being Bulgaria, trounced 5-0 by Sweden despite playing some
foot attacking football.

Italy        1            0-0
Bulgaria    0            0-5

Bulgaria play Denmark in Braga on Friday, while Italy and Sweden meet in
Porto in the evening match.

Finally in Group D, the Czech Republic beat Latvia 2-1 despite trailing at
half time and Germany and Holland shared the spoils in an exciting 1-1 draw.

Latvia and Germany play at 17.00 on Saturday, Holland and the Czech Republic
play the evening match.
