UK recalls diplomat in Romania amid visa probe

The UK civil servant in Bucharest, who exposed a series of immigration scams, has been withdrawn to London amid a probe into "serious anomalies" in visa applications.
James Cameron, the British consul in Romania, was suspended for claiming publicly that U.K. Immigration Minister Beverley Hughes oversaw a secret policy of admitting people to Britain from Romania and Bulgaria without the necessary examination of their documents and background.

The scandal prompted the resignation of Immigration Minister Beverley Hughes in April.

Cameron, 54, has told friends he believes he is the victim of a "political prosecution" designed to punish him for providing "ammunition" to the Tories to attack the government, The Sunday Times reports.

According to the newspaper reports Cameron fears he will be sacked when he appears before a disciplinary hearing in London on Monday.
