Disaster looms in Darfur

World's worst humanitarian crisis

Nearly one million people are cut off from relief agencies in Darfur, Sudan, due to fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces, local militia and the rebel Sudan Liberation Army.

Tom Eric Vraalsen, Kofi Annan's special envoy for humanitarian affairs in the Sudan, called the crisis "one of the worst in the world" and called on the international community to take note of what is happening before it is too late.

Since fierce fighting among the three forces began in the region a year ago, there have been systematic attacks against the civilian population - murders, rapes, robbery, burning of property, looting. There are an estimated 700,000 people out of reach of the authorities or aid agencies due to the fighting.

Over 100,000 have fled across the frontier to Chad, where refugee camps are being set up. Camp Goz Amer 1 is receiving a steady flow of refugees, although these number a few hundred per day, not enough to make a strong impact on the humanitarian disaster looming in the area.

The UNO administers four camps inside Chad for Sudanese refugees, which number between three and four million, making this country the leader in the number of displaced persons.

The UNO is currently trying to broker a ceasefire in the region to allow its relief agencies to reach the 700,000 persons in need.

This is the United Nations Organization at work, the organization which the Bush regime arrogantly derided as a "League of Nations" alluding to the inept international body unable to avert war in the 20th century. This is the UNO committed to its charter, disrespected, disregarded and broken by the USA and its clique of sycophants as they span a tissue of lies to construct a causus belli for the murderous, savage act of butchery perpetrated in Iraq.

The Bush regime is meanwhile busy wasting hundreds of billions of USD of its tax-payers' money on fighting the chaos it created in Iraq and planning its next military interventions, starting with Colombia.

The United Nations Organization fights every day to save lives. The Bush regime speaks for itself.
