UN Attacks Trafficking of Women and Children

New database reveals ex-Soviet Republics as sources, along with Africa and Asia
A new database set up by the UNO is targeting the trafficking of women and children. Other policies are being discussed at the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, currently under way in Vienna.

The database has revealed clear patterns in the trafficking of women and children: they are taken or sold by their families in poor countries, transported through transit countries which do not know about, or turn a blind eye to, what is happening and end up in more affluent countries, usually for practices of sexual exploitation.

The UN Commission has 40 members, which formulate policy and make suggestions as to how to combat the trafficking of human beings. According to the database, the main sources of origin are the former Soviet Republics, Africa and Asia, while Central Asia and Eastern Europe act mainly as transit countries.

The current meeting, which ends on 22nd May, will discuss means to prosecute those involved in this crime, as well as strengthening cooperation and increasing social awareness of the crime and the implementation of victim support resources.
