England: Premier League on Fire

Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle United score 6 goals apiece as the English Premier League gets off to an explosive start. The Bundesliga gets under way, the early leader being…Hoffenheim. In Russia, Zenit ahead…in France, Toulouse and in Portugal, predictably, FC Porto…again.

Wigan 0 Chelsea FC 6; Newcaste United 6 Aston Villa 0; Arsenal 6 Blackpool 0. Three games, 18 goals. Thirty-five goals in the second round of matches, no wonder the Premier League venues are booked up for the foreseeable future.

The German Bundesliga gets off to a flying start also with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim leading with a 4-1 thrashing of Werder Bremen. In Russia, Zenit St. Petersburg is four points ahead with two matches in hand over second-placed FC Rubin Kazan. Zenit (first place, 16 games) has 40, FC Rubin Kazan (two more games) has 36, CSKA Moskva is third (16 games, 33 points); fourth place goes to PFC Spartak Nalchik (18 games and 32 points); fifth FC Rostov (18 games, 29) and sixth FC Spartak Moskva (17 games and 26 points).

In France, Toulouse FC is ahead with 9 points from 3 games. In Portugal, FC Porto, 2 games and 6 points, while last year’s champions SL benfica sit at the bottom of the table with 2 games and zero points, after losing the Portuguese Supercup to… FC Porto!
