Anastasia Myskina announces end of career with the Russian team

It is believed she quits the team because Maria Sharapova joins it next season
Famous tennis player Anastasia Myskina will not play for the Russian national team at the Fed Cup. The tennis star says she wants to make way for young tennis players wishing to become members of the Russian tennis team.

Anastasia Myskina announced her career with the Russian team is over; she will not take part in the Fed Cup. Reuters reports that she made the statement after she entered the second round of Filderstadt Grand Prix with the prize of $650,000.

"I won the Cup twice and I am happy that I did it. Within the past two years, we have had two really wonderful tennis teams. We have so many young girls wonderfully playing tennis and eager to participate in competitions. I just wish them luck and make way for them," Anastasia says.

Anastasia was the first Russian tennis player in history who won the Fed Cup in 2004.

It is not ruled out that Myskina decided to quit the Russian team because next season the most successful young tennis player Maria Shaparova, the world's best tennis player, is to play with the Russian team. She is probably the player for whom Anastasia is making way.

Yelena Dementyeva, the winner of three matches of September Fed Cup finals when the Russian team defeated France, is rather critical of Myskina and her decision to quit. "She would have strengthened the Russian team, but I do not think she wants to play. She did not take part in the matches of the Russian tennis team for two years, she said she would but did not. I just do not think she wants to play at all," Yelena Dementyeva says.
