Russian ballet dancer receives most prestigious award in world arts

Outstanding Russian ballet dancer Maya Plisetskaya was granted the most prestigious Imperial award of Japan.

This award is often compared to the Noble Prize in the art field and it is granted to those who “make a significant contribution to the development and the spread of art worldwide.”

Plisetskaya was nominated in the “Theater and Cinema” section. Some other Russians before the ballet dancer have received the honorable award. Among them are a viola player Mstislav Rostropovich and two composers Alfred Shnitke and Sofya Gubaydulina.

This time around along with Plisetskaya the prize was given to a Japanese avant-gardist artist Yaioi Kusama, an American composer Steve Reich, a Gernan architect Frei Otto and French post-modern sculptor Christian Boltansky, Radio Kultura reports.

The award was established in 1988. It looks like a medal of pure gold with a diameter of 7 cm, and it weighs 350 g. In addition a nominee receives $126,000. The award ceremony will be held today in Japan.
