First gay collective farm (kolkhoz) in Russia

In summer 2004 the first collective farm in Russia for only gays and lesbians as employees, will be founded.
This was the idea of the human rights activists from the city of Nizhny Tagil, the Urals region. In this way they are trying to protect local gays and lesbians from abuse. One of them is Valery Klimov, former chairman for Ural Movement for the Rights of Abused Gays and Lesbians.  Currently Klimov is the Head of the Ural Movement for Human Rights. According to Klimov, they had the idea of having similar group for people of non-traditional sexual orientation, but started implementing it only in January 2004.

A local businessman offered Klimov to “unite gays and lesbians suffering from the intolerant community” and separate them by accommodating in one of the 120 deserted villages of the Ural region. For this purpose the businessman whose name is kept confidential is providing funds for purchasing land and agricultural equipment. Gays and lesbians will be breeding cattle and processing agricultural production. In the months to come three business projects will be submitted to the businessman along with the proposals on locating the “gay farm”. This location will be kept secret.

According to Klimov, there are about 200 members in the "Ural Movement for Human Rights". It is hard to say how many of them will agree to join the new business project.
