Struggle for Ulanova Heritage Continues - 1 October, 2002

A distant relative of the Bolshoi Theatre prima Galina Ulanova (a daughter of Ulanova’s cousin) keeps on striving for the great ballerina’s heritage. She is going to appeal against the court decision which didn’t recognize her a relative of Ulanova.

The struggle for the heritage continues for a long time already. The ballerina died on March  21, 1988. At the same time, daughter of Ulanova’s cousin, Tamara Kadaria currently living in the Tver region of Russia, appealed to the Moscow court and claimed to recognize her the only heiress to Ulanova’s heritage. When the claim was turned down, the woman decided to appeal against the court decision.

It is no wonder that the heiress is so persistent, as the heritage is impressive enough.  It is a luxurious four-room apartment in Kotelnicheskaya embankment in Moscow, furnished in the style of the early 19th century, about one hundred pieces of antique jewelry, over 60 awards conferred to the great dancer,  unique archival letters from poet Boris Pasternak, actor Yury Zavadsky, composer Dmitry Shostakovich, famous physicist Sergey Vavilov and others. It is a surprise to come across some precious things in Ulanova’s apartment, a cigarette-case which once belonged to famous Russian singer Fyodor Shalyapin.

By the way, Ulanova’s heritage isn’t only of great commercial value, but also of historical value. Which is a strong motive for the heiress not to give up the struggle. The woman is not the only one who claims to the heritage: Russia’s Ministry of Culture and the Bolshoi Theatre would like to turn the ballerina’s heritage into museum expositions. The fiscal authority threatens to put up Ulanova’s things for sale if no heirs appear.

As a result, Tamara Kadaria got nothing, and Ulanova’s apartment has been turned into a branch of the Bakhrushin theatre museum.

However, the heiress won’t give  up and is going to appeal against the court decision in the higher authority courts.
